New project in the north of Portugal, need help planting trees, growing crops and implementing permaculture project. The farm has 1 hectare and is located about 1 hour North of Porto, surrounded by beautiful scenery and a short distance from the world famous Camino de Santiago route. Looking for help with planting and caring for trees, planting crops using organic methods, improving habitat for native species, preventing spread of fire by creating clear passages, and generally making the space a paradise. We can also provide teaching about permaculture, organic gardening and self-sufficiency. *PLEASE NOTE: it is a busy project and you should be able to work by yourself at times, use your own initiative and be proactive - preference is for people with previous reviews or at least some volunteering experience.* Type of work (depending on season): 1. Planting/caring for trees. 2. Clearing areas of land for planting of crops. 3. Helping create perimeter. 4. Weeding. 5. Sowing seeds for new plants. 6. Creating pathways and borders. 7. Composting and preparing soil. 8. Clearing areas and creating pathways. 9. Watering trees/plants in summer. 10. Interior refurbishment and restoration in winter. 11. Caring for animals. 12. Working with stones (building and restoring walls). 13. Help with general construction tasks. 14. Cooking and cleaning. 15. Local community restoration (rubbish collection, improving biodiversity, identifying rare species). The area, which is close to the town of Ancora by the sea, is perfect for walking, hiking, cycling, swimming, bird watching and discovering some nearby attractions. These include lots of natural streams with drinkable water and the river Ancora, which has many waterfalls. The work schedule is at 6 hours a day for 4-5 days a week but the best approach is one of flexibility where there is willingness to help and learn. We can cover all food. Accommodation is in different options, depending on the time of year and availability. The first is in the house, for up to two people, or you can bring your own tent or van for camping. The placement is suitable for up to three people (a couple and single person, or two single people). The hosts are Justin and Soraya, alongside David (10) and Priscilla (18), two dogs (Choco and Trovoa), cat (Urze) and chickens (plus more to come!). Justin dedicates himself to implementing regenerative practices. He designed and implemented permaculture projects that integrate sustainable food production, ecological restoration, and community resilience, always driven by a deep passion for animal welfare, bioconstruction, and forestry. His work reflects a commitment not only to the health of the Earth, but also to the well-being of all who depend on it. Alongside these practical actions, Justin explores ways to transform our relationship with each other – and with nature – through meditation, ceremonies, and the respectful use of medicinal plants. He sees these practices as essential tools for cultivating inner awareness, strengthening community bonds, and guiding humanity towards a more harmonious and balanced way of life. Soraya is dedicated to creating solutions that strengthen community networks for the regeneration and protection of human and natural systems. A descendant of farmers, she has felt a deep connection to the Earth since childhood. Her initial training in permaculture reconnected her to her roots and showed her how to actively contribute to regeneration. She began by applying these practices in her family's food forest project, where she experimented, learned, and led workshops. Through ongoing training in regenerative agroforestry, the urgency to act and share tools and knowledge for the collective regeneration of human and ecological systems became even more evident. Soraya combines therapeutic and ecological wisdom to support the integral regeneration of life, from the Earth to humankind.

We spent 7 wonderful weeks at Justin‘s Farm this summer. Justin and his partner, Soraya, have been very welcoming and friendly. For accommodation there is one room in the house and a hypedome near the house. During our stay we decided to sleep in the hypedome which was great, under the stars surrounded by trees and cool summer air. We did work about 6 hours a day for 5 days per week. There were various tasks like weeding, planting, watering, take care of the animals, building a dry toilet, clearing areas, construction work at the house etc. Often we worked independently. Since the project is quite new, things have been a bit chaotic and spontaneous sometimes. Especially on hot days work was demanding but Justin made sure we could work in the shadows when it was too warm. Sometimes, the work with Justin felt a little rushed. Most of the days we had lunch and dinner with the whole family and had nice conversations and played card games every now and then. On our days off we went hiking with the family, to the beach and explored the beautiful area. Kai did also go for a run with Justin. To sum all up the farm is a peaceful place surrounded by nature, away from the city, where we learned a lot about permaculture and forestry. We definitely recommend the farm for woofing! We wish Justin and Soraya all the best and greetings from Germany 👋

The family was welcoming. Work was fine and fair, Food was good. Though I often felt uncomfortable and at unease. Justin and Soraya, especially near the end of my stay had conflicting interests which often led to a tense household. Two times during work, their attitudes led me to remove myself from the situation. Justin can get overwhelmed easily. The kids are really what made my stay, they are wonderful and I wish them the best. Soraya has a good heart and wants the best for all.

On this occasion it clearly was not a good fit, and it represented the only less than very positive experience in 20+ stays we've had on wwoof and worldpackers. This was my responsibility, however, for not doing a proper interview and assessment ahead of the stay.

I had two wonderful weeks at Justin’s. There is a lot to do — during my time there, I did a lot of weeding, learned the basics of permaculture, got the chance to paint a mural, harvested sweet potatoes, and went crystal hunting. I was asked if I had any preferences for tasks, so they also plan around your strengths. Justin and his partner were very welcoming, and I felt at ease immediately. Around the house, it’s always lively: two very cute dogs — one who doesn’t know his size and wants cuddles all the time, and the other, an elderly Labrador, who loves pets just as much. There’s also a little kitten that supervised me during all my tasks around the house. Overall, it was a lovely stay. I recommend being flexible and not too fixated on the working days, as plans can sometimes change at the last minute. But all in all, Soraya and Justin do their best to make your stay very pleasant. Soraya took me on a beach trip and showed me around the area while Justin took me hiking. They are lovley people who try there best to fit everything in their scedule. I would love to come back one day. (Pro tip: Bring some chocolate as a welcoming gift ; ) )

Justin has a very nice place basically in a forest that needs lots of work to be done. But thats great because you can choosen what type of work you want to do, since there are so many o going projects. From construction to landscaping, preparing soil to planting, building stone walls and tiling, everything was possible. He teaches you how to do this stuff very well and in general knows much about DIY, permaculture etc. Justin is a very nice person always eager to help you and also showed me very beautiful and unknown places in the area around. I especially liked that you could use the house almost as it was your own, so going to the kitchen and grabbing a snak was never a problem The room was also very nice and he provides very tasty food and allows you to cook dinner as well. Overall very nice place and person! Highly recommend it :)

We stayed with Justin for a week. He has taken on a big challenge, renovating both his house in Seixas and his farm, which is a 30-minute drive away (beside his job). Justin is a very kind and helpful guy - at times, he seemed a bit „overwhelmed“, but we also had some great conversations. For the most part, we were able to choose our tasks; one of our main projects was building a greenhouse. His dog is very kind - and very big. It’s easy to say from the house that this large dog lives there. So if you are planning to stay with Justin, you should definitely be comfortable around dogs.

I had a great time in Justin’s house and farm with his adorable dog ( who looks like a bear 😍) As I only stayed one week Justin did his best to show me as much as possible. There’s a lot to do so the tasks are varied: I painted, cleaned the land, planted trees and flowers… The area is also very beautiful!

Alizee was a wonderful, kind volunteer and always happy to help out with whatever task she was given. I would happily recommend her to any other hosts. I had forgotten to leave a review for her as became very busy in the weeks after her departure so I hope this can carry over as one.
