WorldWide Opportunities on Organic Farms, Portugal (WWOOF™ Portugal) is part of a worldwide movement linking visitors with organic farmers and growers to promote cultural and educational experiences based on trust and non-monetary exchange thereby helping to build a sustainable global community.
The Aims of WWOOF
Are to provide individuals from all around the world the opportunity:
- to get first-hand experience of organic farming & gardening and to lend a helping hand wherever needed;
- to get into the countryside and experience Portugal and Português;
- to help the organic movement, which is often labour intensive and does not rely on artificial fertilizers & pesticides;
- to make contact with other people in the organic movement;
- to have a wonderful enriching experience;
- to have a cultural exchange with Português.

The founding idea of WWOOF...
...is to facilitate exchanges around organic agriculture. WWOOF hopes to provide a way for people to learn about organic food, agriculture, and sustainable ways of living. In doing so it brings together people who share similar values and philosophies. WWOOF aims to provide helping hands to its hosts and at the same time allow visitors to learn what it means to grow one's own food sustainably and earn a living as an organic farmer, and the importance of supporting sustainable agriculture.
WWOOF is a worldwide network of organizations
WWOOF Portugal is part of the Federation of WWOOF Organisations, a worldwide community that promotes awareness of ecological farming practices by providing visitors with the opportunity to live and learn on organic farms and small holdings. WWOOF was founded in 1971 in the UK and is one of the world’s first voluntourism and ecotourism organizations. WWOOF now exists in 132 countries (and growing) around the world.

...has been connecting sustainable farmers and growers with visitors in a help exchange of education, culture, and sweat to help create wholesome food & other organic agriculture products.

WWOOF Hosts...
...in Portugal are pursuing and promoting sustainable lifestyles. There is a wide variety of Hosts. Some are individuals or families who have a piece of land and desire to cultivate their own produce for themselves, others are communities where each individual uses their skills to make their collective as self-sufficient as possible, others earn a living from their agricultural work. The wide range of different Hosts and activities should ensure that each person WWOOFing in Portugal will find a place that suits them. ...in Portugal provide help with many different activities such as gardening and making compost, animal care, chopping wood, helping with eco-construction projects and much more. Accordingly WWOOFers in Portugal can develop many skills and learn about many different aspects of organic agriculture and sustainable living practices depending on which Host they choose and which activities they participate in.
