Once upon a time wandering wwoofing volunteers, now turned into hosting family, we look forward to your help transforming what was once abandoned dryland culture into a already growing living forest.
We are a family that met through wwoofing, and meanwhile acquired a hectare of abandoned land full of potential. We both greatly enjoyed helping other people realize their farming plans, but with the arrival of children, we fully agreed it was time to reverse roles and start a project of our own.
10 years into it and a lot of terraforming was done, but always a lot of work remains to be done.
We are looking for resilient people who can apreciate the solitude and isolation, can think on their feet, dont fear hard work, and are open to speak their mind as to make their stay the most fruitful and beneficial for all parties involved. We would also prefer to host families with their own kids.
For the current season, works in progress consist mostly of:
Forestry - cutting and repairing trees, planting new ones, processing down biomass into mulch, general landscaping.
Harvesting - Foraging and seasonal fruit gathering and processing for conservation.
Construction - Currently in the process of slowly building a small hay-bale and clay anex for a library, and a small raised-bed garden to make use of the dry-toilet compost.
Waterline repair -Its a work in constant slow progress, due to the long extension of the lines and the destructive power of the running water - this work basically consists in moving rocks.
In the surrounding area there are a few marked hiking paths, along historical and natural points of interest, including some millennial trees. There is very little of civilization accessible at a walking range. At a short 20 minute walk from the farm you can have a swim at the dam in Odeleite, while a 15 minute drive will take you to the beach.
Spot on inside a natural and cinegetic reservation, and thanks to the almost non-existent local human activity, we are frequently visited by a large diversity of wild fauna, spanning from the more common owls, foxes, boars and genets, to imperial eagles, Merops Apiasters, ichneumon herpestus, the occasional deer, and even have a rare Iberian Lynx in the area. The cinegetic species are often likely to be part of a meal.
We are 100% off-grid, and offer as accommodation a modest caravan, plus access to a common area with kitchen, shower, recharging station, internet connection, washing machine.
Cooked meals are omnivorous by default, with options to accomodate for most dietary needs by request.
We suggest to plan the lenght of the stay to be about one or two weeks, which can be extended.
