We are a family from Germany: Johanna, 31, an agricultural expert, Ferdinand, 29, a farmer, and our children. Since February 2024, we have been living in Portugal and managing our 30 hectares of land, of which 3 hectares are olive trees, 5 hectares are agricultural fields, and we also have our own rocky mountain, which in many parts is still overgrown with gorse and blackberries, but also offers fertile valleys with grazing land.
We produce olive oil and sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil. Our farm is transitioning to organic farming, meaning we use only organic seeds and do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We have three cats, some chickens for our own consumption, and a growing flock of Bordaleira sheep (currently only 15).
Our farm is to become a diverse farm, where we research and apply climate-resilient farming practices. Additionally, we will offer social programs for schools and kindergartens, as well as family leisure activities.
Since the farm is still under development, the main focus is on preparing larger projects and caring for the land.
WWOOFers have the opportunity to help build an agricultural operation with us. In the process, they will learn important aspects of an agricultural business and the cycles within it.
Tasks include:
* Caring for and harvesting vegetables
* Building necessary agricultural structures, such as greenhouses, barns, and processing rooms
* Optimizing irrigation
* Maintenance and care of machinery
The focus of the work will be decided together with the WWOOFer.
The main focus will be on caring for the tomatoes and keeping the areas free of blackberries and gorse.
The WWOOFers will be accommodated in a converted caravan. Over time, a guesthouse will also be built. Lunch will be taken together as a group. Breakfast and dinner will not always be shared, but the WWOOFer will have their own kitchen and access to food.
A WWOOFer’s day starts, depending on the season, either early in the morning or a bit later. In the summer, the work should be completed before 12 PM, while in the winter, the working hours may vary depending on the weather. In principle, the WWOOFers’ working hours will mostly be in the morning for about 5 hours. After lunch, the WWOOFer can explore the area (bikes are available) or rest.
In addition to working in agriculture, we want to turn our land into an oasis for ourselves and our environment. This will take a few years, and we are progressing step by step. Since we are located at the foot of the Serra da Estrela mountains, there are countless opportunities for beautiful hikes. The highest mountain in Portugal (2000m) is only an hour’s drive away. The rocky landscape and breathtaking views, as well as traditional villages, make the region inviting for excursions. The nearest small town with supermarkets, schools, and doctors is 7 km away, and the nearest larger city is 15 km away. In the village itself, there is a café and a small supermarket, as well as a river beach that invites swimming in the summer.

Wir sind eine Familie aus Deutschland: Johanna, 31, Landwirtschaftsmeisterin,
Ferdinand 29, Landwirt und unsere Kinder. Seit Februar 2024 leben wir in Portugal und bewirtschaften dort unsere 30 ha Land, davon 3ha Olivenbäume, 5 ha Acker, sowie einem eigenen, felsenreichen Berg, der an vielen Stellen noch zugewuchert ist von Ginster und Brombeeren aber auch fruchtbare Täler mit Weidefläche bietet.
Wir produzieren Olivenöl und getrocknete Tomaten in Olivenöl. Unser Betrieb ist in Umstellung zur biologischen Landwirtschaft, sodass wir ausschließlich Biosaatgut verwenden und keinerlei chemische Dünger oder Pflanzenschutzmittel verwenden. Wir haben drei Katzen, ein paar Hühner für den Eigenbedarf, sowie eine wachsende Herde Schafe der Rasse Bordaleira ( im Momnent nur 15 Stück).
Unser Hof soll zu einem vielfältigen landwirtschaftlichen Betrieb werden, auf dem wir klimaresiliente Landwirtschaft anwenden wollen. Zudem werden wir in einigen Jahren soziale Angebote für Schulen und Kindergärten, sowie Familienfreizeiten anbieten.
Da der Hof sich jedoch im Aufbau befindet, steht zunächst die Vorbereitung größerer Projekte sowie die Pflege der Flächen im Vordergrund.
WWOOFer*innen haben bei uns die Möglichkeit dabei zu helfen einen landwirtschaftlichen Betrieb aufzubauen. Hierbei lernen sie wichtige Zusammenhänge eines landwirtschaftlichen Betriebes und die Kreisläufe in diesem kennen.
Dazu gehören Aufgaben wie
* das Pflegen und ernten von Gemüse
*das Aufbauen von landwirtschaftlich notwendigen Gebäuden, wie Gewächshäuser, Stallungen und Verarbeitungsräume.
*die Optimierung der Bewässerung
*Wartung und Pflege von Maschinen
Wo der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt wird mit dem/der WWOOfer*in gemeinsam entschieden.
Der Schwerpunkt liegt in der Pflege der Tomaten und dem Freihalten der Flächen von Brombeeren und Ginster.
Die WOOfer werden in einem ausgebauten Wohnwagen untergebracht. Im Laufe der Zeit wird zusätzlich ein Gästehaus entstehen.
Das Mittagessen wird gemeinsam eingenommen.
Frühstück und Abendessen werden nicht immer gemeinsam eingenommen, jedoch steht dem WOOfer eine eigene Küche und Lebensmittel zur Verfügung.
Der Tag eines WWoofers fängt je nach Jahreszeit frühmorgens oder etwas später an. Im Hochsommer sollte die Arbeit vor 12 Uhr erledigt sein, im Winter kann die Arbeitszeit je nach Wetterlage variieren. Prinzipiell wird die Arbeitzeit der WWOOFer vorwiegend vormittags für 5h sein. Nach dem Mittagessen kann der/die WWOOFer*in die Gegend erkunden (Fahrrad vorhanden) oder sich ausruhen.
Neben der Arbeit in der Landwirtschaft wollen wir unser Land zu einer Oase für uns und unsere Umwelt machen. Das dauert jedoch einige Jahre und wir kommen Schritt für Schritt voran.
Da wir direkt am Fuße des Serra Estrela Gebirges liegen, bieten sich zahlreiche Möglichkeiten für diverse wunderschöne Wanderungen. Der höchste Berg Portugals (2000m) ist nur eine knappe Stunde mit dem Auto entfernt. Die felsige Landschaft und atemberaubende Ausblicke, sowie traditionelle Dörfer machen Lust auf Ausflüge in die Umgebung. Die nächste Kleinstadt mit Supermärkten, Schulen und Ärzten ist 7km entfernt, die nächste größere Stadt ist 15km entfernt.
Im Dorf selbst befinden sich ein Café und ein kleiner Supermarkt, sowie ein Flussstrand der im Sommer zum baden einlädt.

Somos uma família da Alemanha: Johanna, 31 anos, mestre em agricultura, Ferdinand, 29 anos, agricultor, e nossos filhos. Desde fevereiro de 2024, vivemos em Portugal e estamos a gerir as nossas 30 ha de terra, das quais 3 ha são de oliveiras, 5 ha de campos agrícolas, e uma montanha rochosa própria, que em muitas partes ainda está coberta por giestas e amoras, mas também oferece vales férteis com pastagens.**
Produzimos azeite e tomates secos em azeite. A nossa propriedade está em transição para a agricultura biológica, de forma que usamos exclusivamente sementes biológicas e não utilizamos fertilizantes químicos nem pesticidas. Temos três gatos, algumas galinhas para o consumo próprio, e um rebanho crescente de ovelhas da raça Bordaleira (atualmente apenas 15).
A nossa quinta deve tornar-se numa propriedade diversificada, onde investigamos e aplicamos práticas de agricultura resiliente ao clima. Além disso, ofereceremos programas sociais para escolas e jardins de infância, bem como atividades de lazer para famílias.
Como a quinta ainda está em desenvolvimento, no momento a prioridade é a preparação de projetos maiores e o cuidado das áreas.
Os WWOOFers têm a oportunidade de ajudar na construção de uma exploração agrícola connosco. Durante este processo, aprenderão as relações importantes de uma exploração agrícola e os ciclos nela envolvidos.**
As tarefas incluem:
* Cuidar e colher legumes
* Construir edifícios agrícolas necessários, como estufas, estábulos e espaços para processamento
* Otimizar a irrigação
* Manutenção e cuidado das máquinas
A área de foco do trabalho será decidida em conjunto com o/a WWOOFer.
Os WWOOFers serão acomodados em um reboque reformado. Com o tempo, também será construída uma casa de hóspedes. O almoço será compartilhado em grupo. O café da manhã e o jantar nem sempre serão feitos em conjunto, mas o WWOOFer terá à disposição uma cozinha própria e alimentos.
O foco estará nos cuidados com os tomates e na manutenção das áreas livres de amoras e giestas.
O dia de um WWOOFer começa, dependendo da estação do ano, bem cedo ou um pouco mais tarde. No verão, o trabalho deverá ser concluído antes das 12h, enquanto no inverno o horário de trabalho pode variar conforme o clima. Em princípio, o horário de trabalho dos WWOOFers será predominantemente pela manhã, por cerca de 5 horas. Após o almoço, o WWOOFer pode explorar a área (bicicletas disponíveis) ou descansar.
Além do trabalho agrícola, queremos tornar nossa terra um oásis para nós e para o nosso meio ambiente. No entanto, isso levará alguns anos e estamos avançando passo a passo. Como estamos localizados diretamente aos pés da Serra da Estrela, há inúmeras possibilidades para caminhadas maravilhosas. A montanha mais alta de Portugal (2000m) está a apenas uma hora de carro. A paisagem rochosa e as vistas deslumbrantes, bem como as aldeias tradicionais, tornam a região convidativa para passeios. A cidade pequena mais próxima, com supermercados, escolas e médicos, está a 7 km de distância, e a cidade maior está a 15 km. Na própria aldeia, há um café e um pequeno supermercado, além de uma praia fluvial que convida para um banho no verão.

Wir haben fünf wundervolle Tage bei Johanna und Ferdi auf ihrem kleinen Hof verbracht. Wir haben viele Tomaten geerntet und konnten miterleben, wie sie zu getrockneten Tomaten als fertigem Produkt verarbeitet wurden. Nachmittags hatten wir frei und konnten die wunderschöne Gegend erkunden oder in unserem gemütlichen Caravan entspannen. Johanna und Ferdi sowie ihre zwei kleinen Söhne sind eine lebhafte und liebevolle Familie, die uns freundlich aufgenommen hat und bei denen wir uns sehr wohl gefühlt haben!

Ich hatte eine richtig schöne Zeit auf dem Hof Solnatura :)
Die Familie ist sehr freundlich und lässt einem gleichzeitig ganz viel Raum und Zeit für sich. Man ist gleichermaßen zu Besuch und alleine :D
Ich war zur Zeit der Tomatenernte da. Meine Arbeit bestand also hauptsächlich aus dem Ernten und Schneiden von Tomaten. Ich hatte die beste Zeit mit den zahmen Katzen und den zuckersüßen Schafen!

It was my first WWOOF experience and it was great. I spent a month with Johanna & Ferdinand family and learned a lot about agriculture and their way of life to become self-sufficient.
The communication was really easy and they always seem to make sure everyone is ok with the assignments during the day.
In my experience most of the days were focused on the main product, making dry tomatoes, from the 'picking, cutting, drying… but also plenty of other things to do around like weeding the garden, preparing electric fence for the sheep, building compost toilet and outdoor shower or making traps for the olive flies.
So I really recommend it to anyone who wants to experience some time in Organic Farming.

Johanna and Ferdinand are so lovely!! I had such a wonderful stay for 4 weeks. I felt really welcome and at home. They are easy going and so accomodating. The work was varied and enjoyable. Would recommend to anyone.

We spent a short week with Johanna and Ferdinand (and their lovely children, sheep, cats...), experienced a lot and it feels like we want to come back some day!
A very nice place and good ideas they own and share. We learned a lot, yet most of our tasks were easy enough to start after short instruction, but they are communicative and told many things about their first year in that place.
