Eco Village / Residences / Free Spaces
Welcome to the “Agriao Forest” project — a becoming eco-village and artist-in-residence space on the Azores - Sao Miguel (main island). From the beginning we understand this place as a consciously political project: clearly left, anti-racist, feminist and queer-friendly, committed to climate justice and collective liberation. We (mostly white, cis and living with a lot of privilege) are not “experts”, but in an ongoing process of learning and unlearning. We invite people who come here to share this curiosity and to be willing to reflect, listen, make mistakes, give and receive feedback, and practice non-violent and accountable ways of living together.
My name is Fite, I am an architect based in Berlin. After a long time of searching, a large piece of forest next to the ocean has now been saved from commerce and exploitation. What you hear and see are the trees in the wind, the waves, the birds, the bees — not much more. It is a truly peaceful spot that offers a high level of privacy, nature and distance from noisy roads, barking dogs and neighbours. The view over the ocean from many spots of this land is simply breathtaking ✨.
This is pioneer work — and we mean that literally.
The project started in April this year. We are building something from scratch, in a real forest, with our hands. So far we have built a communal open-air kitchen on a wooden platform with a big table, a dry toilet and shower (soon with hot water). We sleep mainly in caravans. There is no blueprint, no finished product — just land, ideas, and people willing to show up and figure it out together.
If you like getting your hands dirty, working with wood, soil and living things, spending long days outdoors and going to bed genuinely tired — this might be exactly your kind of place.
What there is to do:
There is real, physical, meaningful work here for people who want it. Possible areas of engagement include syntropic agroforestry, permaculture, reforestation, planting fruit trees (avocados, passion fruit, bananas and more thrive in this climate), beekeeping, animal care (chickens, horses, goats, pigs — not for consumption), building and constructing physical spaces for short- and long-term residents, and developing shared community infrastructure from a library to workshop spaces.
We are not in a rush, but there is a lot of ground to cover — literally. If you have skills in construction, forestry, permaculture, woodworking, or just a strong back and a good attitude, you are very welcome here.
Step by step we aim to develop a mindful and sustainable community — a base for artists, academics, activists and makers to engage in socio-communal work while also focusing on their own projects. The path is part of the goal; we want to keep the process relaxed and not lose the joy of creating together.
Living here:
Life at Agriao Forest is outdoor life. You sleep in a caravan, cook together in the open-air kitchen, and spend most of your time outside. The Azores have a mild subtropical climate — summers around 27°C, winters around 15°C — stable, pleasant and ideal for year-round outdoor work and living. The Gulf Stream keeps things consistent, with little variation between day and night. January, February and March can be stormy and rainy and may limit outdoor activities a little.
A historic hiking trail passes through the forest and leads to Praia do Fogo, a beautiful beach about 30 minutes on foot or 15 minutes by e-bike. The thermal springs of Furnas are a 10-minute drive away. Black sand beaches and waterfalls are within reach by car. There is surf nearby. The next supermarket is in Povoação, about 15 minutes by car. This is a good place to be if you love being outside.
The diet is mainly vegan, with eggs, dairy and fish occasionally. Food costs are shared.
Internet:
We are lucky, there is a good connection here. Please make sure your SIM card provider covers Portugal and you have enough gigabytes. If not a Portuguese SIM card with e can be purchased for not much money.
If you have questions any kind we are more than happy to answer them. Just write us ✨
