My name is Mateus, I’m 26, and I live on the farm with my brother Santiago and our father, Alfredo. We run a small, family-owned place in the Alentejo — a rural hotel with a restaurant focused on traditional Portuguese cooking. Day to day, I mostly look after the kitchen and the vegetable garden, along with whatever else needs doing around the place. Over the past times, we’ve been developing a garden that supplies the kitchen directly. It’s still in its early stages — I have some knowledge, but it’s very much a work in progress, and something we’re building gradually and learning from as we go. The farm is surrounded by nature, with forest, animals, and plenty of space. We try to care for the land in a simple, grounded way, following the seasons rather than forcing things. In the winter we manage the garden ourselves, but in the summer, when the hotel and restaurant get busy, it becomes hard to give it the attention it deserves. So we’re looking for someone who would like to be part of this and help us — ideally someone reliable, with a bit of initiative, who’s comfortable doing physical tasks and taking responsibility when needed. There’s always guidance and support, but we value people who can work independently and take care of the space with consistency and attention. The work in the garden follows the seasons and the needs of the kitchen. Daily tasks include: preparing beds sowing and planting harvesting for the kitchen weeding mulching composting general upkeep of outdoor areas From time to time, there are also ongoing projects such as: setting up irrigation systems expanding the growing area improving the structure and layout of the garden A typical day is around 5 hours of work in the morning, leaving afternoons free to rest or explore. WWOOFers are accommodated in rooms on the property, which may be shared. Meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are provided and eaten in the staff canteen, prepared by the kitchen team. The farm is quite remote, so it suits people who are comfortable with a slower pace of life and a certain level of isolation. There is daily staff transport to Cercal, which you’re welcome to use, though it’s a small and quiet village. When possible, we also help with occasional lifts elsewhere. We’re mainly looking for people who are genuinely interested in food, growing, and this kind of lifestyle — more than just passing through.

This was a hard goodbye. My farm-stay at Herdade da Matinha was exceptional. Mateus and Santi welcomed me to their home with open arms and I have much to appreciate. Seeing the process of farm-to-table is really special and makes the gardening take on a greater meaning. I learned a lot from Mateus about planting and soil health. He’s very knowledgeable and always likes to take in new information. I typically worked 2-3 hours in the morning and 1-2 in the evening. The timing is flexible and Mateus sends out a daily task list. During my free hours, I enjoyed hiking on the San Vicente trail, going to nearby beaches, and befriending those running the show from the kitchen and reception. Herdade da Matinha is a lovely place and the people you’ll meet are even lovelier. The staff is very close and looked out for me everyday. People invited me to accompany them to the beach. Chef Carol always always cooked vegetarian food for me that was delicious and healthy. Many hours were spent outside of the canteen for tea, a smoke, and thoughtful conversation. I’ll miss Herdade da Matinha very much. Muito Obrigada Mateus and Santi!
